Deep Tissue Massage During a massage, the therapist lubricates the skin with massage oil and performs a series of massaging strokes. Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas, such as a stiff neck, lower back, and sore shoulders. Some of the same strokes are used as traditional massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. At certain points during the massage, most people feel some discomfort and pain. A deep tissue massage may result in muscle soreness or tenderness, which may last for a day or two.
